Georg Heinrich von Berenhorst (born October 26, 1733 in Sandersleben , † October 30, 1814 in Dessau ) was a military writer .

Life

The natural son of Prince Leopold I of Anhalt-Dessau was awarded in 1750 the Imperial nobility as "of Berenhorst" and one which the Beringer reinvented Bastard arms . He was in the service of Prussia in the Seven Years' War , was adjutant to Prince Heinrich of Prussia from 1757 to 1760 and to King Friedrich II in 1760. Adopted as a major in 1761 , he lived at the court of his half-nephew, Prince Leopold III. von Anhalt-Dessau , traveled with him and later with Prince Hans Georg to France, Italy and England, was President of the Chamber, Court Marshal and Lord Chamberlain . Since 1790 he lived entirely his scientific work.

Berenhorst doubted the prevailing view of methodical warfare by means of maneuvering , advocated the abolition of the standing army and the introduction of a militia and was thus the pioneer of popular armament and general conscription .

As a writer, Berenhorst is the predecessor of Adam Heinrich Dietrich von Bülow in disputing obsolete views, especially in his 1795 reflections on the art of war, its progress, etc. (Leipzig 1797–99, 3rd edition 1827). Aphorisms (Leipzig 1805) and Aus Berenhorst's estate (Dessau 1845–47, 2 vols.) Also deserve attention.

On October 26, 1783, he married Henriette von Bülow (* June 30, 1765, † August 29, 1813) from the Schraplau family . Among the six children from the second marriage were the Dessau Secret Cabinet Councilor Georg von Berenhorst (1794–1852), who was the father of Adolf von Berenhorst , and Thekla von Berenhorst (1808–1890), whose first marriage was to the landlord Julius von Richthofen (1799–1862) married and thus the great-grandmother of the fighter pilot Manfred von Richthofen (1892–1918).
