Georg Jäger (historian)

Georg Jäger (* 1943 in Chur ) is a Swiss cultural historian working in the canton of Graubünden . In 2010 he received the Graubünden Culture Prize, endowed with CHF 30,000, for his services , the highest cantonal award.

life and work

Jäger grew up in Tschiertschen in Schanfigg . After graduating from the Bündner Kantonsschule in Chur, he studied history and German at the University of Zurich . He then did his doctorate in 1976 with a thesis on "Aspects of War and the Chevalerie in the 14th Century in France". From 1973 to 1976 Jäger worked as a teacher at the Cantonal School in Chur, at the Graubünden teachers' seminar and at the Graubünden University of Education .

After several years of preparation, Jäger co-founded the Association for Graubünden Cultural Research in 1985 and served as its vice-president. In 1990 he became managing director and built up the research center, from which the Institute for Cultural Research Graubünden emerged in 2002 and took over the management.

Jäger was editor of the research publications of the Verein für Bündner Kulturforschung until his retirement in 2009. In 2014, together with Ueli Haldimann and Tibert Keller , he wrote Heinz von Arx's anniversary work, the Chur-Arosa Railway Experience - A Stroll through the Schanfigg . The focus of his own research is the culture of the Walser people in Graubünden. He is honorary president of the Graubünden Walser Association and chairman of the Pro Tschiertschen association .

Jäger is married, has four children and lives in Chur.
