Georg Juel

Georg Juel (born October 11, 1840 in Wisby near Oslo ; † May 28, 1900 in Nischwitz ; full name: Petter Andreas Georg Juel ) was a German businessman , entrepreneur and local politician . The city of Wurzen granted him honorary citizenship because of his commitment to the city .

Live and act

Georg Juel was the son of a Norwegian landowner and a Hamburg merchant's daughter. His mother died early, so he came to live with his grandparents in Hamburg. Here he completed a commercial apprenticeship . During a professional stay in Leipzig he met Friederike Schütz from Wurzen, in 1864 the two became engaged, in 1866 the wedding took place. Because of the childlessness of the marriage, the Juels adopted an orphaned siblings in 1885.

Friederike Schütz was the daughter of Johann Friedrich August Schütz. Since 1840 he has operated a wallpaper factory in Wurzen specializing in the production of velor wallpapers. In order to avoid the wool dust imports from France , which are necessary for the velor , Schütz founded the wool dust and carpet factory of Schütz & Juel , thus taking his son-in-law into the company as a partner. The company developed successfully under Juel's leadership. Wool dust, but also runners, porters and blankets and, above all, carpets later, were produced, which won prizes at international exhibitions in the 1870s. Some of the designs came from Georg Bötticher , Joachim Ringelnatz's father , who worked as a draftsman for the Schütz'sche wallpaper factory from 1875 to 1888.

1883, the company was the firm Wurzner carpet and velor factories into a joint stock company converted, in May 1914 to shorten the company Wurzner carpet factory AG . The production remained at a high artistic level for many decades until its liquidation in 1995.

Juel worked in numerous honorary positions. He was a member of the city ​​council for 16 years and its head for 13 years - an office that he eventually had to give up for health reasons. For 24 years he was honorary director of the volunteer fire brigade in Wurzen. For many years he also headed the beautification club he founded .

In 1879 he bought a piece of land in the north of the city. After four years of private garden use, he sold it to the city at a fraction of its value. With the intensive participation of the Beautification Association, a park was created here, which forms the southern part of today's city park.

Honors

  • Georg Juel was awarded the honorary title of (royal Saxon) commercial councilor for his economic merits .
  • On the day of his silver wedding anniversary in 1891, the city of Wurzen granted him honorary citizenship.
  • Shortly before his death, the street along the northwest side of today's Wurzener Stadtpark was named after him.
  • In 1908 a monument was erected in the city park showing Juel's profile portrait and an inscription in tribute to it. The memorial was demolished in 1973 and the plaque with the dedication came into the museum.
