Georg Kretzschmar

Georg Kretzschmar (born February 14, 1889 in Leipzig ; † May 28, 1970 ibid) was a German painter and graphic artist .

Life

Georg Kretzschmar was born as the son of the mechanical engineer Karl Edmund Georg Kretzschmar. From 1903 to 1907 he completed an apprenticeship in lithography and then worked independently in this profession until 1914. As a painter he was self-taught . On July 1, 1910, he joined the SPD .

Between 1914 and 1918 Kretzschmar did his military service as a soldier in the First World War . In the Weimar Republic he worked until 1933 as a freelancer for various newspapers of the labor movement, such as the Leipziger Volkszeitung and the Chemnitzer Volkszeitung .

During the National Socialism , Georg Kretzschmar was banned from working and was blacklisted . In 1943 he was again forced to do military service and a year later he was taken prisoner by the Americans, from which he returned to Leipzig in 1946.

From 1946 Kretzschmar worked as a freelance painter and graphic artist and joined the SED in the same year . Between 1946 and 1951 he also worked as a lecturer at the adult education center in Leipzig and headed a painting and drawing group at SAG Maschinenfabrik Unruh & Liebig, later VEB Schwermaschinenbau SM Kirow Leipzig .

Georg Kretzschmar became a member of the Association of Visual Artists in Germany in 1952 and was represented at the 3rd German Art Exhibition in Dresden's Albertinum a year later . In 1959 he was delegated to the International Art Exhibition of the Socialist Countries in Moscow, followed by solo exhibitions in 1960 and 1967.

Works

Georg Kretzschmar painted in the style of socialist realism . That is why his paintings "In a responsible position" and "Die Volkslehrerin" were exhibited at the exhibitions "Artists create for peace" organized in this way in 1951 in Berlin and at the 3rd German Art Exhibition. In 1956 he also made a sgraffito for the VEB axle, spring and forge works "Hermann Matern" in Roßwein and created illustrations for the press, school and children's books.
