Georg Lorenz Bauer (born August 14, 1755 in Hiltpoltstein , † January 13, 1806 in Heidelberg ) was a German Lutheran theologian .

Life

As the son of a pastor, he studied theology from 1772 at the University of Altdorf near Nuremberg . He also studied oriental languages ​​with passion. In 1775 he received his master's degree and one year later became the early preacher in the castle chapel in Nuremberg . From 1786 he was a teacher, from 1787 the vice-principal of the St. Sebald School. In 1789 he became professor of rhetoric and oriental languages ​​as well as ethics in the succession of the orientalist Johann Andreas Michael Nagel, who died in 1788, at the Altdorf University of Applied Sciences. In 1805 he went to Heidelberg University as a professor of oriental literature and biblical exegesis , where he received the title of church council in the same year.

He became known for his enlightenment theology using the historical-critical method with regard to the Old and New Testaments . "He was of the opinion that a critical elimination of everything mystical and legendary, a truth valid for all time, the essential, generally valid part of the Bible would bring to light."
