Georg Martin Thomas

Georg Martin Thomas (born February 12, 1817 in Ansbach ; † March 24, 1887 Munich ) was a philologist , historian and member of the Reichstag .

Thomas was the son of a Protestant tailor from Silesia. He attended high school in Ansbach. From 1835 he attended the University of Munich , in 1837 he went to Leipzig , where he received his doctorate . He returned to Munich in the same year, passed the philological state examination with the grade 1 and the predicate “excellent” and completed his habilitation in 1841 with a thesis “Commentatio de Aristophanis avibus”.

In 1842 he received an apprenticeship at the royal cadet corps, and in 1845 he was appointed professor. He held this teaching post until 1856 and then worked at the royal court and state library in Munich , of which he was a member until his retirement in 1877. During this time he published historical writings, particularly on the history of Venice, and became an associate member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences in 1848 and a full member in 1856 . From 1866 he was a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg .

In 1871 he was elected to the German Reichstag for the National Liberal Party as a member of the constituency of Middle Franconia 3, to which his hometown Ansbach belonged, to which he belonged until 1874.
