Georg Peringer
Georg Peringer (* in Winzheim , then Duchy of Franconia , today Bavaria ) was a master stonemason, sculptor of the Renaissance and from 1600 master builder of St. Stephen's Church in Vienna .
Georg Peringer was the first flag thrower on the top of the tower of St. Stephan in the 17th century.
Life
His hometown Winzheim had been a free imperial city since 1248 . In 1420 Frantz Peringer is documented as "tummeister" at Eichstätt Cathedral . A relationship with Georg is therefore very likely.
The imperial city Winzheim counted in 1529 with representatives of the Protestant minority in the protestation of Speyer and spoke out against the imposition of the imperial ban against Martin Luther made. It is documented that 25 women were burned as witches in 1596/97 .
In 1592 a Hans Peringer received citizenship in Vienna.
In the Kärntnerviertel we found Georg Peringer as a tenant in Mülchgässl (now Vienna 1, Milchgasse) . It was entered in the tax statements from 1600 to 1604 and from 1607 to 1609. In 1604 he imposed the income tax “Auf dem Anger”, from 1607–1609 he was the builder of the “Civitas Stainhuetten” . Despite his position as a builder, he can be classified as a poor master.
Master builder of St. Stephan in Vienna
Peringer von Winzheim, was a master builder at St. Stephan in 1600 .
Testament witness for Catharina Puchhauserin, wife of the master stonemason Balthasar Puchhauser. She wrote her will on October 3rd, 1600. One of her witnesses was Georg Peringer, stainmez and paumeister bey St. Steffanus . What was special about it was that Catharina confessed to being a Protestant , and yet the master builder of St. Stephen's cathedral appeared as a witness. The will was published on October 21, 1600.
Upper Chamber Office accounts 1608: Georg Peringer, citizen and stonemason, as who can be seen and used with a flag on St. Stephen's Tower, up at the Knopff , by virtue of his advised supplicating ain pecher per .. 20 fl . The cathedral builder had been paid for by the city of Vienna since the 14th century. Peringer received a trophy worth 20 florins.
The reason for the flag waving on June 25, 1608 was the Treaty of Love . Archduke Matthias wrestled his older brother, the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire Rudolf II. The crown of Hungary and the domination of Austria from. The force behind Matthias was Melchior Khlesl , Bishop of Vienna , his chancellor since 1599 and an essential promoter of the Counter Reformation .
Upper Chamber Office accounts 1615: Entry from December 19, 1615 .. Georg Peringer, citizen and paumaister at Sand Steffans Tumbkirchen Alhie, receives, in order that he can be useful for church gifts .. to ainer delicacy and veneration .. 32 fl. For many years in office, Peringer received 32 fl.
Will witness for Helene Danner, Caspar Danner, citizen and stonemason here in Vienna, married housewife, on June 6, 1616. After that, no further dates are known.
