Jiří Polívka (also Georg ; born March 6, 1858 in Enns , † March 21, 1933 in Prague ) was a Czech Slavist , literary scholar and folklorist . He published some of his writings under the pseudonym Bohdan Kamiński .

Career

After Polívka graduated from the German grammar school in Prague, he studied Slavic philology at the universities in Prague and Agram ( Zagreb ). His main interest at that time was central Bulgarian language monuments. Polívka received his doctorate in 1882 at the University of Vienna , followed two years later - after the University of Prague had split up - his habilitation at the Bohemian University in Prague . In the following years he went on various study trips to Slavic countries. From 1885 he taught Slavic languages at various universities in Bohemia and Czechoslovakia . In the two years 1889 and 1890 he was in contact with Pypin , Weselowski and Tichonrawow in Moscow . In 1895 he became professor of Slavic Philology at Prague University. From March 3, 1920 to October 12, 1932 he was vice chairman of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences .

Publications

Polívka was the author of numerous studies in various Czech, Slovak and foreign journals in the field of linguistics, history of the literature of Slavic peoples and Slavic ethnology. He was the founder and an editor of the Národopisný věstník československý [Czechoslovak Ethnological Journal ] and an editor of the Věstník slovanské filologie a starožitností [Journal of Slavic Philology and Antiquities].

  • Súpis slovenských rozprávok I – V [Directory of Slovak Fairy Tales]. Martin 1923–1932 (it is the largest scientific edition of Slovak fairy tales)
