After attending the German and Latin schools, he went to the Würzburg high school. In his hometown he studied law and political economy from 1852. He completed his studies in 1856 and was awarded a doctorate in law in Erlangen. He began his professional career in 1856/57 in civil service at the regional courts of Würzburg and parish churches. In December 1865, Georg Zürn was initially provisionally elected on December 7th in response to his application on November 25th, and on February 21st, 1866, assigned as the first legally qualified mayor of Würzburg. During his tenure (1865-1884) he promoted housing and road construction, initiated the deconsolidation (reversal of the fortifications built since the Thirty Years War ) of Würzburg, reformed the school system and from 1873 had the 31-hectare Ringpark created , for which he created the Swedish one in 1880 Hired landscape architects Lindahl as city gardeners. In 1866 he was awarded the Order of Merit 1st Class by St. Michael . His confirmation in office and re-election on December 17, 1868 was unanimous as before. After the new municipal code was passed on July 1, 1869 , various reforms and investments were initiated under Zürn, who was politically close to the liberal camp and the progressive party. From 1875 until his death he was president of the Lower Franconian state parliament, in which he had represented the city of Würzburg since 1870. In 1876 he married Euphemia, the daughter of the Würzburg court pharmacist and magistrate Alexander Sippel. In 1880 he received the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown , which was associated with the personal nobility, but Zürn waived its entry in the Bavarian nobility register. He died unexpectedly of a heart attack in his home on the morning of May 10, 1884. A memorial created in his honor by Michael Spieß (1838-1894) and unveiled in front of the old station on June 12, 1886, was removed in 1937.
