Philipp Michel (politician)

Philipp Michel , from 1903 Ritter von Michel , (born April 1, 1845 in Sächsenheim , † June 13, 1922 in Würzburg ) was a German lawyer, legal counsel , magistrate , royal privy councilor and from 1900 to 1913 mayor of the city ​​of Würzburg .

Philipp Michel was born as the youngest child of the farmer Peter Michel and his wife Barbara Michel, b. Kemmer, born. He attended the then only grammar school in Würzburg , which he graduated from high school in 1864. He briefly studied philosophy and then law at the University of Würzburg, where he and friends re-established the Germania fraternity in 1864 .

He then began his legal career as a legal intern in Würzburg.

On March 6, 1873 he was elected as a legally qualified magistrate.

In 1872 he married Maria Karoline Loos from Würzburg. From this marriage three daughters were born. Maria Karoline died in 1888. In 1889, Michel married Babette Mohr, who died in 1918.

Philipp Michel was second legally qualified mayor under Johann Georg von Steidle from 1893 to 1900 and, as Steidle's successor, first legally qualified (from January 1, 1908, mayor) in Würzburg. After his retirement from the office of Lord Mayor for reasons of age, the former finance officer Max Ringelmann , whose previous election as second mayor Michel had already supported, succeeded him in 1913.

As a retired Privy Councilor and Lord Mayor, he was made an honorary citizen of the city of Würzburg in 1913 on the occasion of his 40th anniversary in office in view of his outstanding services to the city and its residents.

Michelstrasse in the Würzburg- Zellerau district was named after him.
