George Addison West

George Addison West (born March 11, 1931 in Hightstown , New Jersey , † January 19, 2013 ) was an American jazz trombonist , arranger and university professor .

Live and act

Addison West came from a musical family; after attending Hightstown High School and The Peddie School, he studied at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music , Ohio and at Michigan State University , where he received his Masters. Before teaching, he was a trombonist and arranger with Kai Winding , the Guy Lombardo Orchestra and The Airmen of Note , a jazz ensemble for the US Air Force . West taught music theory and brass at Stephen F. Austin State University, Texas, the University of Calgary, and James Madison University, Virginia, where he founded and directed a jazz program for 25 years until he retired in 1996. In addition, he composed and performed as a musician.

As a professor emeritus at JMU, he was an adjunct professor on the faculty of the music school at Stetson University in Florida for 16 years . He also created the jazz program of the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp (Michigan), directed the Blue Lake International Jazz Ensemble ( People to People ), with which he toured Europe, and directed the instructor jazz ensemble Blue Lake Monster . He was also a member of the International Association of Jazz Educators , for which he worked as a regional coordinator and writer. West, who last lived in DeLand , Florida , died in early 2013 of complications from myelodysplastic syndrome .
