The George Airport (English: George Airport ) is an airport in George , South Africa .

history

The airport was opened as a copy of Keetmanshoop Airport in 1977. It used to be called PW Botha Airport , named after the former South African President Pieter Willem Botha , who lived in Wilderness , part of the community of George .

In 2003 the airport handled around 154,000 passengers. Already in 2004 the number could be increased to 199,000 passengers. In the 2016/17 financial year, the number of passengers was 738,641. The national road N2 touches the airport area to the south.

George Airport is also used as the base for several flight schools.

Airlines and Destinations

The companies Airlink , CemAir , FlySafair , Kulula , Mango and South African Express fly from the airport to Johannesburg – OR Tambo , Johannesburg – Lanseria , Cape Town , Durban and Bloemfontein .

Incidents

On 7 December 2009, slipped Embraer ERJ 135 of the South African Airlink in wet conditions over the end of the runway to the street R404. Seven passengers and the first officer were injured.
