Sir George Leonard Staunton, 1st Baronet (born April 19, 1737 in Galway , Ireland , †  January 14, 1801 in London ) was a traveler, doctor and diplomat in the service of Great Britain . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Staunton ".

Live and act

Staunton studied medicine at the University of Montpellier and came to the West Indies as a doctor in 1762 , where he became secretary to George Macartney, 1st Earl Macartney , the governor of the island of Grenada . Staunton accompanied him to East India when Macartney took over the governorship of Madras on behalf of the British East India Company . On Macartney's legation trip to China (1792 to 1794) Staunton accompanied him as legation secretary and at the same time received the title of ambassador extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary. On this trip he observed the Chinese custom of giving tea an orange flavor, later referred to as Earl Gray . Today, however, Earl Gray is provided with bergamot .

On October 31, 1785, Staunton was given the hereditary title of Baronet , of Cargins in the County of Galway , in the Baronetage of Ireland .

George Leonard Staunton died on January 14, 1801 in London. His son George Thomas Staunton (1781-1859) later made a career with the East India Company, traveled to India and was a member of the British Parliament.

According to Staunton, the plant genus is Stauntonia DC. from the finger fruit family (Lardizabalaceae).
