George Li

George Li ( Chinese  黎卓宇 , Pinyin Lí zhuōyǔ ) (born August 24, 1995 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is a Chinese- American pianist .

education

George Li was born to Chinese parents. He took piano lessons at the age of four and later studied with Yin Chengzong. He graduated from Walnut Hill School and the New England Conservatory Preparatory School, where he studied with Wha Kyung Byun and Russell Sherman. He is enrolled in a dual study program at Harvard University and the New England Conservatory .

career

He made his orchestral debut with the Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of nine, a year after making his solo debut in his hometown of Boston. Since then he has appeared in recitals, as a chamber musician and as a concert soloist. At the age of eleven, he made his Carnegie Hall debut , which was featured in NPR's (now Public Broadcasting Service ) new series , From the Top. Two weeks later he appeared on the Martha Stewart show.

The orchestras with which he has performed as a soloist include the Los Angeles Philharmonic , the Mariinsky Orchestra, the Orchester National de Lyon, the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin , the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic , the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra , the Cleveland Orchestra , the Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orquesta Sinfónica de la Juventud Venezolana Simón Bolívar , the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, the Brooklyn Philharmonic, the Waltham Symphony Orchestra, the Princeton Symphony Orchestra, the Albany Symphony Orchestra, the Lexington Symphony Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra . the Munich Symphony Orchestra and the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra .

On June 7, 2011, Li performed for President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama as well as Chancellor Angela Merkel and her husband Joachim Sauer at a state reception dinner in the White House Rose Garden .

His debut album with solo works by Frédéric Chopin , Franz Liszt and Sergei Rachmaninoff was released in autumn 2017.

Li lives in Lexington , Massachusetts.

Awards

Li won the Music Teachers Association first prize in Massachusetts State competitions at ages six and seven . In 2005, at the age of nine, he won second prize in both the Virginia Waring International and the Cincinnati World Piano Competition . In 2008 Li won second prize at the Gina Bachauer International Piano Junior Artist Competition . In 2010 he won first prize at the Cooper International Piano Competition . In the same year he won first prize at the International Auditions of the Young Concert Artists .

On June 23, 2011, Li was named one of two recipients of the 2012 Gilmore Young Artist Award . To this day, he is the youngest recipient of the award.

On July 1, 2015, Li and Lukas Geniušas won second prize at the 15th International Tchaikovsky Competition . Since then he has had a highly regarded international career with recitals, chamber music performances and appearances with major orchestras in North America, Asia and Europe. In 2016 he was one of four recipients of the Avery Fisher Career Grant .
