Juri Nikolajewitsch Roerich (also George Nicholas Roerich , Georges de Roerich ; Russian Юрий Николаевич Рёрих [ ˈjurʲɪj nʲɪkəˈɫajɪvʲɪʧʲ ˈrʲɔrʲɪx ]; born  August 16, 1902 in Okulowka ; † May 21, 1960 in Moscow ) was a Soviet scientist on East Asia .

biography

Yuri Nikolajewitsch Roerich was the eldest son of Nikolai Konstantinowitsch Roerich ( Nicholas Roerich ) and Jelena Iwanowna Roerich ( Helena Roerich , née Schaposchnikowa, 1879–1955). From 1912 to 1916 he attended the K.-I.-Maj-Gymnasium in Saint Petersburg . He spent 1917 to 1918 in Finland . 1919-1920 he studied in London Indo-Iranian , 1922, he studied at Harvard Indology , 1923 Asian Studies at the Sorbonne in Paris . He worked with Paul Pelliot , Jacques Bacot and Sylvain Lévi and did research on Central Asia , Tibet and Mongolia and learned Chinese and Persian (with IF Minorski). From 1924 to 1925 he researched Sikkim , Kashmir and other regions of South Asia, at the same time he learned Sanskrit and Tibetan .

From 1925-1928 Yuri Nikolaevich Roerich participated in the expeditions of his father to Central Asia - Ladakh , Mongolia, Tibet and Xinjiang ( Republic of China ) - in part, he founded the Himalayan Research Institute Urusvati in Darjeeling , which is a branch of the New York Roerich Museum is and in whose work his younger brother Svetoslav Roerich took part. From 1931 to 1932 he worked in Western Tibet, from 1934 to 1935 in Mongolia, Manchuria and other parts of China. In 1935 he went to India. From 1949 to 1957, Yuri Nikolajewitsch Roerich worked at the University of Kalimpong in West Bengal , where he a. a. Taught Chinese and Tibetan.

In August 1957, Yuri Nikolayevich Roerich returned to the Soviet Union and became head of the Department of Philosophy and Religious History of India at the Institute for Asian Studies of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in Moscow, where he worked until his death two and a half years later.
