George Riashi

George Riashi BC (born November 25, 1933 in Kaa-el-Rim , Lebanon , † October 28, 2012 ) was Archbishop of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church of Tripoli in Lebanon.

Life

Georg Riashi was one of nine children of Khattar and Zahia Riashi. He attended the local school until 1948 and then moved to St. John's Seminary of the Basilians . Until 1953 he was taught in the seminary of the Basilians and in the meantime took a temporary religious vows . His religious name was Athanasius, after Athanasius the great . In 1956 he took perpetual vows and in 1958 began his studies at the Jesuit University in Beirut . From 1958 to 1965 he studied philosophy , theology , computer science and mathematics . In 1962 he was ordained a subdeacon and in 1963 a deacon . With his ordination on April 4, 1965, he dropped the name Athanasius and took the name George, he became a member of the Basilian of St. John the Baptist . After receiving a scholarship, he continued his French studies at the Catholic University of Paris . He then went back to Lebanon and taught at St. John's Seminary of the Basilians for the next five years. At the same time he devoted himself to work in the scout movement and became its general chaplain for the whole of Lebanon.

On December 1, 1971, Riachi was sent to Detroit and supported Archimandrite Agabios in his office. He took over the pastorate in Detroit in 1978 and was made an archimandrite on July 21, 1981 by Patriarch Maximos V. Hakim .

Episcopal dignity

Pope John Paul II appointed him on April 21, 1987 first bishop of the Archangel Saint Michael Eparchy in Sydney . The Patriarch of Antioch Archbishop Maximos V Hakim and the co-consecrators Archbishop Joseph Elias Tawil of Newton and Archbishop Jean Mansour SMSP , auxiliary bishop in Antioch , donated to him on 19 July 1987, the episcopal ordination .

On July 28, 1995, he was appointed Archbishop of Tripoli in Lebanon by Pope John Paul II. In this capacity he was a participant in the Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops on the Middle East .

On March 3, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related retirement.
