George Washington Woodward (born March 26, 1809 in Bethany , Wayne County , Pennsylvania , † May 10, 1875 in Rome , Italy ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1867 and 1871 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .
Career
George Woodward attended Geneva Seminary , now Hobart College in Geneva ( New York ), and then Wilkes-Barre Academy in Pennsylvania. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1830, he began to work in Wilkes-Barre in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1837 he took part in a constitutional convention of his state as a delegate. Between 1841 and 1851 he was presiding judge in the Pennsylvania Fourth Judicial District. In 1844 he ran unsuccessfully for the US Senate . A year later he was appointed to the Supreme Court by President James K. Polk . However, he was unable to take up this office because the US Senate refused to give its approval. From 1853 to 1862 he was an associate judge on the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania ; between 1863 and 1867 he was there presiding judge ( Chief Justice ). In 1863 he ran for governor of Pennsylvania to no avail .
After the death of MP Charles Denison , Woodward was elected in the by-election for the twelfth seat of Pennsylvania as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he took up his new mandate on November 21, 1867. After being re-elected, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1871 . By 1869, the work of Congress was weighed down by tension between Republicans and President Andrew Johnson , which culminated in a narrowly unsuccessful impeachment trial. In July 1868, Woodward was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in New York . Two years later, he renounced another congressional candidacy. In the same year, 1870, he applied unsuccessfully for the post of presiding judge in the eleventh judicial district of his home state.
After his time in the US House of Representatives ended, George Woodward moved to Philadelphia , where he practiced as a lawyer. In 1873 he was again a delegate to a constitutional convention of his state. A year later he set off on a trip to Europe, during which he died on May 10, 1875 in Rome. He was buried in Wilkes-Barre.
