George Wilhelm Glimmann

George Wilhelm Glimmann , wrongly Wilhelm Georg Gliemann (born December 9, 1802 in Winsen (Luhe) , † May 20, 1876 in Hann. Münden ) was a German tax officer and ornithologist.

Life

George Wilhelm Glimmann was the son of the royal Hanover customs administrator Heinrich Glimmann. After attending the Ilfeld convent school , he studied law at the University of Göttingen from 1823 to 1826 , where he became a member of the Corps Hannovera Göttingen . In 1827 he became an assistant at the tax office in Bantorf and in 1837 a tax inspector in Dannenberg (Elbe) . In 1850 he was Chief Tax Inspector in Göttingen and was transferred to Münden in 1856 as Chief Tax Inspector and Customs Councilor.

In addition to his job, Glimmann worked as an ornithologist and, since his school days, had brought together an important scientific collection of stuffed birds of prey , owls and hens from the fauna of today's Lower Saxony , which his widow of the former forest academy Hann. Münden sold. Until the forest academy was relocated to Göttingen, the collection was in the Welfenschloss Münden . Due to a typographical error in the essay by Hans Geyr von Schweppenburg in the monthly ornithological reports of 1908, this collection was sometimes incorrectly named in the literature as Gliemann's bird collection, and to this day in some cases. The collection with originally over 300 exhibits is now in the Forest Zoological Collection of the University of Göttingen.

Glimmann was an extraordinary member of the German Ornithological Society , which inspected his collection in Münden on the occasion of its meeting in Kassel in 1869 .
