Georges Davy (born December 31, 1883 in Bernay ( Eure ); died July 27, 1976 in Coutances ( Manche )) was a French sociologist . He was a student and pupil of Émile Durkheim (1858-1917).

life and work

Georges Davy was professor of sociology at the Sorbonne , member of the Académie des sciences morales et politiques , president of the jury of the Agrégation de philosophie and dean of the Faculté des lettres de Paris . Together with many other French and German intellectuals, he took part in the first university course in Davos in 1928 .

Together with Marcel Mauss and Paul Huvelin (1873–1924), Davy conducted anthropological studies of the origins of the idea of ​​the contract . Probably his best-known work is La foi jurée: étude sociologique duproblemème du contrat: la formation du lien contractuel (Travaux de l ' Année sociologique , 1922), which he wrote in memory of Émile Durkheim (1858-1917) and Lévy-Bruhl (1857 –1939) ( Hommage d'une vive et respectueuse reconnaissance ).
