Georgia Franzius

Georgia Franzius (born Georgia Vlachodimitriou ; born January 3, 1944 in Lamia ) is a Greek - German Classical and Roman Provincial Archaeologist .

Georgia Franzius was born the daughter of a Greek officer and his wife. Between 1950 and 1961 she attended elementary school and the girls' college in her native town of Lamia. In the fall of 1961 she began studying prehistoric , classical and Byzantine archeology, as well as pedagogy and history at the University of Athens . In January 1966 Franzius married a German, moved to Germany with him and took German citizenship. She continued her archeology studies at the University of Göttingen in the winter semester of 1967. In November 1969 she completed her studies with a master's degree. The doctorate with Wolfgang Schiering and the co-supervisor Paul Zanker took place in July 1973 also in Göttingen. The subject of the dissertation was dancers and dances in archaic vase painting .

Alongside Wolfgang Schlüter , Susanne Wilbers-Rost , Frank Berger and Rainer Wiegels, Franzius became known as the archaeologist in charge of researching the probable location of the Varus Battle in the Kalkriese region in the Osnabrück region near Bramsche . She made a particular contribution to the recording of the finds from Oberesch, but was also involved in the conception of the exhibition and the publication of the accompanying catalog Kalkriese - Römer im Osnabrücker Land. Involved in archaeological research on the Varus Battle in a leading role.
