controversy
Resignation from the Menuhin Foundations in Germany (2005) and Switzerland (2007)
Because of statements classified as right-wing extremist or nationalist , he was removed from his position as chairman of the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation in Germany on November 12, 2005. The managing director of the foundation, Winfried Kneip, charged Menuhin with a "xenophobic attitude". They disapproved of "the mention of our foundation and its work in a media organ that [...] can be attributed to the 'right-wing extremist environment'". The foundation's attention was drawn to press reports, including at Spiegel Online , that Gerard Menuhin had given interviews to the national newspaper , where he was the author of a column entitled “Menuhin and how he sees the world” and that he was also part of the NPD - Newspaper German voice expresses.
In view of the family's Jewish origins and Yehudi Menuhin's humanistic commitment, the public response to Gerard Menuhin's forced resignation was considerable both at home and abroad. Because of the threat by Credit Suisse , as an important sponsor of the foundation, that it would ultimately end its support, Menuhin also resigned as President of the Swiss Menuhin Foundation in Grenchen in June 2007 in view of the continued existence of the institution. Gerard Menuhin announced that his brother Jeremy had agreed to take over the post.
Holocaust Denial 2015
Menuhin is a well-known author of the Reich Citizens Movement and is close to the worldview of right-wing populists . In 2015 his book Tell the Truth & Shame the Devil was published . In it Menuhin denies Germany's responsibility for the outbreak of World War II as well as the factuality of the Holocaust , which he describes as “the greatest lie in history”. The Holocaust denier Ursula Haverbeck bases her claims on Menuhin's book.
