Gerd Alberti

Gerd Alberti (born  January 12, 1943 in Wiener Neustadt ; † November 9, 2016 ) was a German zoologist . From 1995 to 2008 he was professor of general and applied zoology and from 1997 to 2007 also director of the institute at the University of Greifswald , specializing in ultrastructural studies on arachnids and soil ecology .

Life

Gerd Alberti was born in Wiener Neustadt in 1943 and studied biology at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel from 1964 , where he also received his doctorate in 1972 and his habilitation in 1980 . In the same year he received a position as an academic advisor at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg .

After he was appointed adjunct professor in Heidelberg in 1987, he moved to the Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald in 1995 . There he held a professorship for general and applied zoology until his retirement in 2008. From 1997 to 2007 he also served as director of the Zoological Institute and Museum.

Gerd Alberti was married and the father of three children. He died in 2016.

Scientific work

The focus of research by Gerd Alberti, who has published more than 200 scientific publications as well as 17 monographs and book chapters, was comparative morphological studies of the ultrastructure, especially of arachnids, and soil ecology .

In 2002 he received a six-month Alexander von Humboldt Polish Honorary Research Fellowship from the Foundation for Polish Science , which in Poland is the equivalent of the German Humboldt Research Award. The Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan awarded him an honorary doctorate in May 2009 in recognition of his scientific achievements and his commitment to German-Polish cooperation . He was made an honorary member of the International Society of Arachnology in July 2010.

The mite species Halolaelaps albertii and the tardigrade species Pseudechiniscus alberti were named after Gerd Alberti .
