Gerd Fesser (* 1941 in Sömmerda ) is a German historian .

Fesser studied history at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig , specializing in German history 1789–1917. From 1973 to 1991 he worked as a research assistant at the Central Institute for History of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR in Berlin and from 1993 to 1996 at the Historical Institute of the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena . His research focus was the Wilhelmine Empire . He has published numerous books, including about the Wars of Liberation , wrote for the weekly newspaper Die Zeit until 2017 and was a co-author ofNew German biography .
