Gerd Hubold (born August 2, 1950 in Sangerhausen ) is a German marine and fisheries biologist .

Life

Gerd Hubold grew up in Burg an der Wupper , graduated from the Carl-Duisberg-Gymnasium in Wuppertal-Oberbarmen in 1969 and then studied biology at the Christian-Albrechts-University in Kiel . There he worked on the topic of "growth of the North Sea herring "; after a three-year trip to Brazil , he was in 1982 in Kiel as an academic student of Gotthilf Hempel with a thesis on Engraulis anchoita doctorate .

His doctoral supervisor then called him to the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), where Hubold did research on the ecology of Arctic and Antarctic waters. In 1985 he became assistant professor at the Institute for Polar Ecology in Kiel, where he completed his habilitation in 1991. In the same year Gerd Hubold was appointed head of the Institute for Sea Fisheries in the Federal Research Center for Fisheries (BFAFi) at the Palmaille in Hamburg-Altona and was (re) elected several times as director of the BFAFi from 1996. Since 1999 he has also been a member of the German delegation to the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES; German: International Council for Marine Research) in Copenhagen and has worked closely with the Marine Stewardship Council during this time ; from February 2006 he was Secretary General of ICES for six years. Until the end of August 2013 he worked in Braunschweig at the Institute for Market Analysis and Agricultural Trade Policy of the von Thünen Institute as part of a project that investigates the role of fisheries and aquaculture for future global food security. He retired at the end of 2013.

Gerd Hubold is married, has two grown-up children and has lived in Kiel again since he ended his career.
