Gerd Möller (soccer player)
Gerd Möller (born January 29, 1941 in Herten ) is a former German football player. He played 1966/67 at BSG Wismut Gera first division football in the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football .
Life and athletic career
Gerd Möller grew up in Herten-Langenbochum . He started as a miner at the Schlägel & Eisen colliery .
As a teenager, Gerd Möller played for Blau-Weiß Langenbochum . In 1962 he moved to VfB Hüls , for which he played one season. In 1963 he returned to Blau-Weiß Langenbochum. In 1965 his team was promoted to the association league , which was then the third highest division in the DFB .
In 1966 there was the rare case that an active soccer player moved from the Federal Republic to the GDR . Gerd Möller met his future wife Karin at a friendly in Zeitz in 1961 . For five years he visited her during his vacation from the mine, then he decided to East Germany emigrate . A Stasi employee who “looked after” Möller in the Eisenberg refugee reception center in Thuringia and was a supporter of the Wismut Gera company sports association , referred Möller to this association. Wismut Gera was promoted to the GDR league for the 1966/67 season. After the six-month ban had expired, Möller was able to compete in competitive games in the area of the GDR football association . On the 7th matchday he played his first league game in the encounter between FC Vorwärts Berlin and BSG Wismut. In the 1: 5 defeat he was used as a left defender in place of the regular Rudi Bätz . In addition to another deployment in defense, Möller played three more games as a striker in the first half of the season and then injured himself. In the second half of the season he was no longer called up in the league.
Gerd Möller found work as a welder at VEB Keramische Werke Hermsdorf (KWH) in Hermsdorf . From 1967 he played for BSG Motor Hermsdorf in the third-rate district league Gera . In 1969 he was district champion with her and rose to the second-rate GDR league . In the GDR league season 1969/70 Möller, who completed all 30 point games as a striker and was the team's top scorer with ten goals, was Hermsdorf's most important player. However, he could not prevent the BSG Motor from descending immediately. The ascent was just as quick. Since only twelve teams played per season after a league reform, Hermsdorf managed to remain second-rate for two seasons in a row. In 1971/72 as well as 1972/73 Möller was again one of the top performers: in 1972 he was Hermsdorf's top scorer with 17 and 1973 with 8 goals. In the 1972/73 season, 10th place in Hermsdorf was no longer enough to keep the league.
Then Gerd Möller appeared in the 1974/75 season for the last time in the GDR league. In the second half of the season he played all nine league games as a midfielder for BSG Motor Werdau and was once again successful with two goals. The 34-year-old then ended his career as a competitive athlete.
After the fall of the Berlin Wall in December 1989, Gerd Möller and his wife Karin moved to their home town of Herten.
