Gergely Kovács (born July 21, 1968 in Târgu Secuiesc ) is a Romanian-Hungarian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Alba Iulia .

Life

Gergely Kovács first studied at the Catholic Theological Institute in Alba Iulia and from 1990 at the Pontifical Gregorian University . During this time he was a seminarian at the Pontificium Collegium Germanicum et Hungaricum de Urbe . On July 3, 1993, he received the sacrament of ordination for the Archdiocese of Alba Iulia . After further studies at the Pontifical Lateran University in the subject of canon law , he obtained a licentiate in 1994 and a doctorate in 1996. He also took legal courses at the Gregorian.

From 1996 to 1997 he worked as a chaplain in his home diocese. He then went back to Rome and worked for the Pontifical Council for Culture .

On December 24, 2019, Pope Francis appointed him Archbishop of Alba Iulia. The President of the Pontifical Council for Culture , Gianfranco Cardinal Ravasi , ordained him episcopal on February 22nd of the following year . Co- consecrators were his predecessor György Jakubinyi and the Apostolic Nuncio in Romania, Archbishop Miguel Maury Buendía .
