Gerhard Brendler

Gerhard Brendler (born January 20, 1932 in Voigtsbach ; † May 31, 2020 in Berlin ) was a German historian .

Life

Gerhard Brendler attended elementary school and from 1946 to 1949 did an apprenticeship as a timber merchant. From 1949 to 1951 he attended the workers and farmers faculties in Dresden and Leipzig . In 1951 he passed his Abitur, joined the SED and was delegated to study abroad. He began studying medicine at the Sanitary-Hygienic Mechnikov Institute in Leningrad and in 1952 switched to studying history at the Zhdanov University in Leningrad , which he finished in 1957 as a graduate historian. Back in the GDR, Brendler became a political teacher at the SED district party school "Fritz Heckert" in Ottendorf . In 1958 he became a research assistant at the Historical Institute of the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena , and in 1960 he moved to the Karl Marx University in Leipzig in the same position . The doctorate took place in 1965 with Max Steinmetz and Ernst Werner with a thesis on the subject of the Anabaptist uprising in Münster 1534/35. The judgment of the Anabaptist empire in historiography and its position in the early bourgeois revolution in Germany . Then Brendler became head of one of the scientific departments at the Central Institute for History at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR . In 1987 he became a professor there, which he remained until it was liquidated in 1991. In 1992 he was appointed to a professorship at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder) , where he retired in 1996.

Between 1977 and 1989 Brendler was a member of the editorial board of the Yearbook for the History of Feudalism and towards the end of the GDR was a member of the board of the GDR Historians' Society . He mainly dealt with the Reformation and the German Peasants' War .

Gerhard Brendler died in Berlin at the age of 88.
