Gerhard Erker

Gerhard Erker (born October 16, 1946 in Oberhausen ) is a German chemist and university professor . He teaches at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster .

Life

Erker received his doctorate in 1973 from the Ruhr University Bochum under Wolfgang R. Roth . From 1974 to 1975 he was a post-doctoral student at Princeton University and received his habilitation in 1981 in Bochum . In 1985 he was appointed to the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg to succeed Günter Helmchen , and since 1990 he has held a chair in organic chemistry at the University of Münster . His main research interests include the “frustrated Lewis pairs”. These are acid-base pairs based on the concept of Gilbert Newton Lewis , which exist side by side in solution ready to react without neutralizing each other, whereby the term “frustrated” refers to the willingness to react without an actual reaction.

Gerhard Erker is a full member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts (since 2003), a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina (since 2011) and a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (Acatech) . In 2003 he was accepted as a full member of the Academia Europaea .
