Gerhard Fischer (diplomat)

Gerhard Fischer (born September 20, 1921 in Oslo ; † July 3, 2006 in Copenhagen ) was a German diplomat and ambassador .

Life

Fischer was born the son of a diplomat. He grew up in China since he was five . After graduating from high school in Shanghai , he returned to Germany for military service in 1940. After the end of the Second World War he studied law and sinology . In 1952 he entered the diplomatic service and found employment at the diplomatic missions in Addis Ababa , Hong Kong , Madras and Kuala Lumpur . He was also Asia Representative in the Foreign Office and became Ambassador to Ireland in 1977 , where he was replaced by Carl Lahusen in 1980 . He himself then took over the post of ambassador to the Netherlands from Herbert Dreher and stayed there until 1983, after which Otto von der Gablentz became his successor there. Most recently, he became ambassador to Switzerland in 1983 and held this position until his retirement in 1986.

Fischer then moved to South India and worked for five years in the leprosy station in Chettipatty . Then he built his own hospitals, workshops, schools, wells and latrines in the foothills of the Himalayas through the Gerhard Fischer Foundation he founded. Between 1980 and 2000, Fischer lived in his projects for six months a year.

In 1997 he was awarded the Gandhi Peace Prize. He used the associated prize money of around half a million DM for his humanitarian projects.
