Gerhard Freilinger

Gerhard Freilinger (born November 24, 1927 in Linz ) is an Austrian physician.

Career

Gerhard Freilinger first attended elementary school, then the Linz grammar school, before he was called up to the war front in Carinthia on the Slovenian border in 1941 . He spent the age of 17 in Yugoslavia as a prisoner of war. He then returned home via Landeck - seriously ill with his kidneys - and completed his high school diploma in Linz.

Freilinger studied medicine in Innsbruck from 1947 to 1954 and did his doctorate there. He then worked for two more years in Innsbruck, one year at the dermatological department and one year at the surgical department of the Innsbruck University Clinic . Freilinger spent two years in the United States in the plastic and reconstructive surgery departments at the University of Iowa , Washington University in St. Louis, and Cornell University in New York . In 1957 he continued his training in Vienna at the II. Surgical University Clinic . He completed his training at the hand Surgical Center in Paris and at the Arthritis Center Heinola in Finland.

In 1971 , Freilinger completed his habilitation in surgery with a special focus on plastic surgery. He was responsible for 200 scientific publications, books and scientific films. His personal commitment as a reconstructive surgeon has been for victims of chemical warfare in Vietnam , Laos and Afghanistan since 1967 , and later also in Angola and Iraq .

In 1975 Freilinger was appointed associate professor for plastic surgery and head of the plastic surgery department at the II. Surgical University Clinic in Vienna. This was followed by an appointment as chief physician for hand surgery, plastic surgery and rheumatology at the St. Gallen Cantonal Hospital , which he refused. On September 30, 1993, Freilinger retired from the II. Surgical University Clinic Vienna. He then became head of the department for plastic and reconstructive surgery in the Goldenes Kreuz private hospital in Vienna.

Freilinger is co-editor of two books on muscle transplantation . He was a founding member and also president of the Austrian Society for Plastic Surgery, founding president of the Austrian Society for Senology and board member of the Austrian Society for Space Medicine .

Freilinger married the Swiss Haydee born in 1959. Fehr and has 3 children with her.
