Gerhard Grimm (born July 10, 1927 in Grünsfeld ; † February 17, 1998 in Reutlingen ) was a German painter , graphic artist and art scholar .

Life

Childhood and youth

Grimm was born the sixth of seven children. He spent his childhood and youth in Ilvesheim . His father Karl Grimm was the rector of the adult education center . His family environment was musically and artistically active. The father was good at drawing, the mother's father and brother had worked as stone sculptors. Drawing and painting became Grimm's favorite pastimes.

After his first school years in Ilvesheim he attended the humanistic Karl-Friedrich-Gymnasium in Mannheim. Towards the end of the Second World War , at the age of 15, he was deployed as an air force helper on anti-aircraft guns and was drafted into military service after graduating from high school . After his release from captivity in the summer of 1945, Gerhard Grimm contributed to the upkeep of his parents' house as a sign painter for the American occupation forces. In addition, since his war high school diploma was not recognized at some universities, he made up for the high school diploma in Heidelberg.

Academic years

In 1947 Gerhard Grimm began studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe with the aim of becoming an art teacher. He broke off the German studies in Heidelberg, which had started at the same time as a minor. As a new minor, he chose geography, which he was able to take at the Technical University of Karlsruhe. In 1951 and 1953 the study period ended with the successfully passed state exams. Grimm studied art as a major at short notice with Karl Hubbuch and Erich Heckel , especially with Otto Laible . After a few semesters, Grimm became a master student of Otto Laible, to whom he remained very attached even after his studies.

Work in Pforzheim

After his time at the academy, Grimm worked as an art teacher at grammar schools in Heidelberg and Karlsruhe, then - for almost a decade - in Pforzheim. In addition to the teaching assignment, he continued to work artistically. The oil painting of the Pforzheim suburb of Brötzingen, exhibited in the Kunsthalle Baden-Baden in 1953, was reproduced in the magazine “The Artwork”. Most of the early linocuts and woodcuts are few and the printing blocks are no longer available. Examples are the woodcuts Ilvesheim and Mädchen am Fenster. The woodcuts Ebernburg (a village in the northern Palatinate, after the retirement of the father, the old residence of the parents), lovers, the prodigal son and tamer with horse were printed in full editions. Her style consists of the combination of decorative black and white surface tension and the gestures of the figurative, which reveal an intensive examination of early German Expressionism.

Life in Reutlingen

In 1962 he became a lecturer in art education at the newly established Reutlingen University of Education and moved to Reutlingen . In 1969 he was appointed professor for art studies and art didactics at the Reutlingen University of Education. With the beginning of his new teaching activity he dealt more often with problems of art theory and questions of art phenomenology. In 1987 and 1998 he was a board member at the Reutlingen Art Association. He died of liver poisoning caused during the war.

Act

Grimm had exhibitions at home and abroad; and gave lectures in German-speaking countries. He also published publications on questions of art history and art education .

He drew his inspiration from a wide variety of topics of all kinds. He was particularly fond of people, animals, sport and dance and so a large number of woodcuts and drawings with motifs from these areas were created. His artistic processing of incidents, events and situations could be touching and emotional and cheerful and humorous, but also mockingly distant. The view of the Achalm has repeatedly moved Gerhard Grimm to capture his local mountain in woodcuts, drawings or oil paintings .

Estate and Estate Administration

Grimm left behind numerous artistic works. The artist's family has entrusted the art expert and auctioneer Thomas Leon Heck (Dusslingen) with the recovery and maintenance of the entire estate.
