Gerhard Kegler

Gerhard Kegler (born January 26, 1898 in Grünewald , Neustettin district , † July 16, 1986 in Gießen ) was a German officer, most recently in the rank of major general in World War II .

Life

Kegler joined the army on March 1, 1917 as an ensign . He served (from April 1918) as an officer in the First World War .

After the end of the war he was accepted into the Reichswehr and worked in various units; In 1937 he reached the rank of major.

In the Wehrmacht he was in command of the 48th Infantry Division and the 245th Infantry Division during World War II . From December 1944, Kegler was major general.

In the last week of the war, Kegler was appointed combat commander of Landsberg an der Warthe . Before that, he was appointed commander of the Woldenberg infantry division . He was sentenced to death by the Reich Court Martial (Str.PL 9/45 of the 3rd Senate) because, contrary to the order, he had not prevented the evacuation of the city. The death sentence was not carried out. There was a demotion for easy protection. The President of the Imperial Court Martial Hans-Karl von Scheele obtained the suspension of the sentence until the end of the war. The judgment was not overturned until a few years after the end of the war.
