Gerhard Larcher (theologian)

Gerhard Larcher (born September 7, 1946 in Innsbruck ) is an Austrian fundamental theologian .

Life

After studying Catholic theology and philosophy in Innsbruck , Münster and Löwen a . a. with Karl Rahner , Hermann Josef Pottmeyer and Peter Hünermann , he received his doctorate in 1978 in Münster on “Modernism as theological historicism. Approaches to overcoming it in Maurice Blondel's early work ”.

From 1978 to 1984 he was a research assistant to Hermann Josef Pottmeyer at the Ruhr University in Bochum , and from 1985 to 1989 lecturer for philosophical-theological borderline questions at the Academy of the Diocese of Essen. From 1989 to 1990 he was head of the secretariat for theological training of the Diocese of Innsbruck; on November 1, 1990 he was appointed to the chair of fundamental theology at the University of Graz . At the end of the summer semester 2014, Larcher retired; nonetheless, he remains a sought-after discussion partner in the field of art and theology.

In his theological work, Gerhard Larcher primarily deals with the religious philosophy of the 19th and 20th centuries; the focus here is on the French-speaking area, in particular the work of Maurice Blondel , Paul Ricœur and Emmanuel Levinas . Another important part of his work deals with the relationship between art, church and faith, Christianity and church in modern times, and interreligious dialogue.
