Gerhard Oesten

Gerhard Oesten (born May 22, 1947 in Lübeck ) is a German forest scientist . Until his retirement in 2012 he was a professor at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and director of the Center for Renewable Energies .

Life

Gerhard Oesten studied forest sciences in Freiburg from 1968 and graduated in 1972 with a diploma. He then received his doctorate in 1979 at the Institute for Forest Management and Forest Management at the University of Freiburg under Gerhard Speidel (1923–1992). He wrote his dissertation on the subject of studies on the socialization of young members for the forest administrations and received the grade summa cum laude for it .

From 1978 to 1980 he was a forest judge at the forest offices in Wehingen and Breisach and from 1987 to 1989 head of the state forest office in Karlsruhe-Hardt.

At the same time he continued his scientific work. From 1980 to 1986 he was a university assistant and research associate in the Department of Forestry and Resource Management at the University of California, Berkeley , USA.

From 1989 Oesten was Professor of Forest Management and Forest Management at the University of Freiburg and at the same time director of the Institute for Forest Economics. He was the dean of the Forest Science Faculty and spokesman for the Graduate School Socioeconomics of Forest Use in the Tropics and Subtropics . From 1999 to 2003 he was Vice-Rector of the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg and from 2007 until his retirement in 2012 he was Managing Director of the Center for Renewable Energies (ZEE).

In September 2010, he and Niko Paech took over the chairmanship of the Association for Ecological Economics for two years , from 2012 to 2014 and 2016 to 2018 he was an assessor on the board. Gerhard Oesten was a member of the citizens' initiative Pro Culture Capital Freiburg.

Oesten researches the history of dogma and basic methodological questions, the management of state, municipal and private forest operations and forest planning. He is concerned with the socio-economy of tropical forests, in particular with the reduction of emissions from deforestation and destructive forest use ( REDD process), and bioenergy . One of his assistants was Michael Flitner .
