Gerhard Ortinau (born March 18, 1953 in Borcea , Călărași district , People's Republic of Romania ) is a German writer .

Life

Gerhard Ortinau was born as a member of the Romanian German minority during the deportation to the Bărăgan steppe . He grew up in Săcălaz ( German  Sackelhausen ) in the Banat . Between 1972 and 1976 he studied German and Romanian at the University of Timișoara (today University of the West ). He was a member of the writers' group Aktiongruppe Banat , to which Richard Wagner , Rolf Bossert , William Totok , Johann Lippet and Ernest Wichner belonged and to whom Herta Müller and Horst Samson were close.

In 1976 he resigned from the Romanian Communist Party in protest and applied for permanent emigration to the Federal Republic of Germany . In the same year the Romanian secret service Securitate opened an operational case against Ortinau. In 1980 Gerhard Ortinau was able to leave Romania, since then he has lived and wrote in Berlin .

Scholarships and Awards

Ortinau received several grants, including the grant from the German Literature Fund and the author grant from the Berlin Senate. In 2005 he was awarded the Würth Literature Prize (3rd prize).
