Gerhard Rauschen

Gerhard Rauschen (born October 13, 1854 in Heinsberg ; † April 12, 1917 in Bonn ) was a Catholic theologian , church historian , patrologist and schoolboy .

Life

After graduating from the Quirinus-Gymnasium Neuss in autumn 1874 , he studied Catholic theology in Bonn from 1874 to 1877. On August 11, 1878, he was ordained a priest in Roermond, the Netherlands . After a few years in private positions, he returned to Bonn from 1882 to 1887 to study Classical Philology and History , where he was awarded a Dr. phil. received his doctorate . From Easter 1887 to Easter 1888 he completed his probationary year at the Bedburg Knight Academy , then from 1888 to 1889 headed the secondary school for girls in Bergisch Gladbach as rector . From 1889 to 1892 he was religious and senior teacher at the Progymnasium Andernach, from Easter 1892 religious and senior teacher at the Royal High School in Bonn. On May 7, 1895, he received his doctorate in Freiburg. theol., on June 30, 1897, the habilitation for church history took place in the Catholic-Theological Faculty of Bonn . On October 22, 1902, he was appointed associate professor in the same faculty, and on April 10, 1915, he was appointed full honorary professor for church history with special consideration of ancient church history and patristicism . In his lectures he also dealt with Christian archeology .

His extensive scientific work reaches into the high Middle Ages ; the outline of patrology and the Eucharist and sacrament of penance in the first six centuries of the Church were translated into French and Italian, and the yearbooks of the Christian Church are still in use under the Emperor Theodosius the Great . The floor plan was continued successively until 1980 by Joseph Wittig , Berthold Altaner and Alfred Stuiber under changing titles in new arrangements.

In 1904 he founded the series Florilegium Patristicum tam veteris quam medii aevi auctores complectens for the publication of individual scientific editions of patristic source texts for teaching at universities. T. appeared in several editions and continued after his death until the end of the Second World War.

In addition to these and other scientific works, he wrote numerous textbooks for religious instruction in higher schools, all of which appeared in several editions and some of them were reissued long after his death.

His faculty colleague Joseph Felten characterizes him in his obituary as hardworking and as an early riser with a regulated and simple way of life, without social needs, and summarizes: »He was a capable teacher and worthy priest, open to others, without suspicion, with a cheerful way of life and full of humor «(Felten p. 11). He left his fortune to a foundation for the needy in his homeland, he designated a legacy for the boys' choir of the Bonn Minster Church to finance annual excursions.
