Gerhard Schneemann (born February 12, 1829 in Wesel , † November 20, 1885 in Kerkrade ) was a German theologian , church historian and Jesuit .

Life

After completing his school career, Gerhard Schneemann, born in Wesel in 1829, began studying law in 1845 . In 1848 he switched to studying theology in Bonn and entered the seminary in Münster in 1849 , where he became a deacon in 1850 . During a one-year study visit at the Collegium Germanicum in Rome , he mainly devoted himself to philosophy .

Snowman, he joined the Jesuits in 1851 and was ordained a priest on December 22, 1856 . Until 1858, Schneemann worked as a pastor in Cologne and between 1858 and 1862 as a teacher of philosophy for friars in Bonn and at the Jesuit community in Aachen . In the Maria Laach Abbey, which was newly acquired by the Jesuits and converted into a school , Schneemann took over the professorship of church history and church law there until 1869. In addition to his teaching activities, he worked as a librarian and published various writings. Together with Florian Riess , Schneemann was the editor of two series of brochures on the Syllabus errorum and on the First Vatican Council , which with the subtitle "Voices from Maria Laach" were the forerunners of the eponymous magazine, of which Schneemann was one of the founders. He also wrote for the magazine The Catholic Missions .

Driven out of Maria Laach by the Kulturkampf from 1872 onwards, Schneemann settled in Maastricht , where he - relieved of his work as a teacher - devoted himself primarily to the history of dogma until his death. Franz Heinrich Reusch described Schneemann as "one of the most zealous and skilful defenders of papal infallibility".
