Gerard (Gerrit) Vreeken (born January 20, 1923 in The Hague ; † February 28, 2013 ; also Gerrie Vreeken , last name also written Vreken ) was a Dutch football player .

biography

Vreeken, the son of a baker from The Hague, played for the Hague club ADO in the 1940s , with whom he became champions in 1942 and 1943 . In the final on June 14, 1943 in the Hague Zuiderpark Stadium, the right winger scored the winning goal in the 85th minute to make it 1-0 over the Enschede sports club . During the occupation worked the 19-year-old in 1942 next to the football in a radio business when it was announced that he should as forced laborers to Germany deported are. To avoid this, on the advice of a club colleague, a member of the National Socialist Movement (NSB) collaborating with the occupiers , he joined the labor service , which enabled him to stay at home and continue playing football. This went hand in hand with a sympathetic membership in the NSB which , in Vreeken's own words, was “not agreed in advance” . However, Vreeken later stated that he had never been to an NSB meeting and had also not paid any membership fees.

After the end of the war, Vreeken was excluded from the club for one year because of his NSB contacts and thus also from the game operations, and his voting rights were withdrawn for ten years. When a friend from Monaco invited him to a trial session at AS Monaco , he went to the French second division , where he played for FC Nantes from 1949 to 1954 after his time in the principality . After the war he was the first Dutchman to earn his living as a professional football player abroad. In 1953 he was the right defender in a Dutch professional selection that played in Paris against France for a charity game in favor of Dutch flood victims, which went down in Dutch football history as Watersnoodwedstrijd . This game, he said on the occasion of a reunion 50 years later, “is the best memory of my life. The atmosphere, all the Dutch battlers who came to France - I'll never forget that. "

After his active time, Vreeken stayed in France and worked there and for a time again in the Netherlands as a coach. Stations included the Zwolsche Boys in Zwolle , Be Quick 1887 in Groningen and the Lorraine FC Dugny . Most recently Vreeken lived in Villefagnan , about 50 kilometers south of Poitiers .

A sympathizing lid was a kind of trial member of the NSB. These sympathetic members were not allowed to wear NSB badges, black shirts or uniforms and were not entered in the central register of members in Utrecht . However, after a period of at least three months in which they worked for the NSB, they could become full members. There were about 30,000 of these sympathetic leaders in the Netherlands.
