Gert Eilenberger (born July 21, 1936 in Hamburg ; † November 21, 2010 ) was a German theoretical physicist.

Life

Eilenberger passed his Abitur in 1955 at the Stormarn School in Ahrensburg and studied physics at the University of Göttingen , received his doctorate there in 1961 under Friedrich Hund ( A contribution to the theory of internal field emission ) and habilitated there in 1965 ( derivation of generalized Ginzburg-Landau equations for pure Superconductors based on a variation principle ). From 1965 to 1967 he was at Cornell University and from 1970 professor at the University of Cologne .

Eilenberger was head of the Institute for Solid State Research (IFF) at Forschungszentrum Jülich (formerly Jülich nuclear research facility) for more than thirty years , where he was also chairman of the Scientific and Technical Council. He was also involved in setting up the HLRZ (now NIC) supercomputer center in Jülich. In 2001 he retired in Jülich.

He made significant contributions to the theory of superconductors (Eilenberger equations) and nonlinear dynamics ( solitons ).

He was a member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences (1996) and a member of the board of directors of the German Physical Society .

He was co-editor (Chairman of the Board) of Europhysics Letters.

Eilenberger was a specialist in general physics for the German Research Foundation and, after reunification, promoted cooperation with Dresden (today's Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research , IFW).

After his retirement he was active in local politics in Jülich.
