Heiner Müller-Krumbhaar
Heiner Müller-Krumbhaar (born April 20, 1944 in Liegnitz ) is a German physicist. He is Professor of Theoretical Physics at RWTH Aachen University and Institute Director at Forschungszentrum Jülich .
Life
Heiner Müller-Krumbhaar attended the Spohn high school in Ravensburg . He then studied at the Technical University of Munich and became a member of the Corps Isaria in 1964 . Graduate physicist since 1970, he was awarded a Dr. rer. nat. PhD . After postgraduate stays at the IBM Research Laboratory in Zurich (1973) and at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh (1976), he was appointed professor for theoretical physics at the Technical University of Hanover in 1978 . Since 1981 he has been institute director at Forschungszentrum Jülich (Institute III for Solid State Research ), where he was a post-doc in 1974, and at the same time professor at RWTH Aachen University . Since 2006 he has been Research Director for Physics at Forschungszentrum Jülich. In 2008 he founded the German Research School for Simulation Sciences at Forschungszentrum Jülich and RWTH Aachen University, of which he is President.
His main research area is the theory of nucleation and pattern formation in dendritic growth as well as computer simulation (e.g. Monte Carlo method ) of models of statistical mechanics, where he worked with Kurt Binder in the early 1970s .
In 1997 Müller-Krumbhaar became chairman of the Dynamics and Statistical Physics section of the German Physical Society (DPG) and in 1998 chairman of the Commission for School Physics of North Rhine-Westphalia . Since 2003 he has been the spokesman for the Condensed Matter research program of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers . Since 2007 he has been a member of the planning committee for massive numerical computing at the French Ministry of Education and Research.
He had and still has various important functions in the DPG: For example, in 2000 he was the overall coordinator of the year of physics in Germany and in 2002 a member of the board of the DPG (for public relations). Since 2001 he has been editor of the journal Europhysics Letters .
