Kurt Binder

Kurt Binder (born February 10, 1944 in Korneuburg ) is an Austrian physicist .

Life

Binder was born in 1944 as the son of the engineer Eduard Binder and his wife Anna. Eppel born. After attending school in Vienna from 1950 to 1962, he studied physics at the Vienna University of Technology from 1962 to 1967 . In 1969 he received his doctorate under Helmut Rauch at the Austrian Institute for Nuclear Physics in Vienna . He stayed for a few months as an assistant to Gustav Ortner before moving to the Technical University of Munich at the end of 1969 , where he did research with Heinz Maier-Leibnitz and Herbert Vonach until 1974 , interrupted by a one-year research stay at IBM Zurich Research in 1972/73 Laboratory . In 1974 he was a Research Consultant at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill (USA).

In 1973 he was offered a call from the Free University of Berlin , which he refused. At the end of 1973 he completed his habilitation at the Technical University of Munich. From 1974 to 1977 he was professor for theoretical physics at the Saarland University in Saarbrücken. Then he moved to the Jülich nuclear research facility as head of the institute , combined with a professorship for theoretical physics at the University of Cologne . In 1983 he accepted a professorship at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz . Since 1989 he has also been an "External Scientific Member" of the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz.

Kurt Binder has been married to Marlies Ecker (* 1948), with whom he has two sons, since 1977. In his spare time he plays the piano.

Act

Kurt Binder's main research areas are statistical physics , solid state physics and materials research. Particularly outstanding are his pioneering work on the Monte Carlo method , which contributed decisively to computer simulations next to the theoretical physics and experimental physics as a third approach for the analysis of thermal properties of many-body systems could be developed. Fundamental advances are among others. a. succeeded in his investigations on a multitude of phase transitions , on spin glasses and in the field of polymer physics . An important parameter for characterizing phase transitions is the binder cumulant named after him . He is one of the most cited physicists in the world.

Binder is co-editor of numerous physical journals and since 1992 a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences , since 2003 of the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz and since 2005 external member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences . He is also a member of the German Physical Society and the European Physical Society and a Fellow of the Institute of Physics . Binder has been a member of the Leopoldina since 2011 .
