action

Ilona and Ekkehard Wille, whose mother Hella works as a train conductor, would like her and Herbert Lohner, with whom she is a close friend, to marry. Herbert is also a train attendant and has a young son who, however, does not live with him. Since he will soon be required to attend school, it is important to consider where to start school. Hella is of the opinion that one must first see whether the children understand each other at all. Because a family in which this is not the case has no future. So she decides that her children will spend the summer holidays in Wesendorf on the Baltic Sea , where little Andreas lives with the older Hansen couple, in order to see whether the children harmonize with one another.

At first, Andreas reacts somewhat shyly and cautiously to his future siblings, but trusts them more and more. Ekkehard's attempts to teach the little one to swim fail at first. For Ilona and Ekkehard it is also unfamiliar to put their interests aside and to take care of Andreas. So the little one is sitting all alone on the beach when Herbert Lohner unexpectedly drops in on a flying visit. Ekkehard prefers to play ball with the older children and Ilona meets with Siegfried, a friend who is also on vacation on the Baltic Sea.

When Ekkehard gets into a dangerous situation, when his foot gets caught in a net in the water, Andreas runs to Ilona for help. The girl can rescue her brother from the risky situation. When two small cats are about to be killed, Ekkehard stands up for them and finds a new home for the animals, which impresses the new little brother very much. In return, Ekkehard wants Andreas to make a second attempt to learn to swim.

The cohesion of the three is tested again and again and does not happen without difficulties. When Ilona and Ekkehard are feeling pretty bad one evening, Andreas runs alone to the doctor for help. The doctor diagnoses " sunstroke ". His remark that someone who bravely walks alone through the forest to get help doesn't have to be afraid of water leads the little one to try swimming all by himself. When Ekkehard finds his things on the beach, he thinks Andreas has drowned and collapses. Andreas, who had retired to the dunes because of the foaming sea , finds him crying on the beach. Relieved and happy, Ekkehard and the newly arrived Ilona embrace their little brother. They have passed the test and have grown together to become siblings. In Berlin they are expected by their happy parents.
