The common dwarf pondweed ( Potamogeton pusillus ), also called small pondweed , is a species of the genus pondweed ( Potamogeton ) within the family of the pondweed plants (Potamogetonaceae).

description

The common dwarf pondweed is an herbaceous plant . The thin, slightly flattened stem is heavily branched. The leaves are submerged, 0.5 to 2, rarely up to 3 mm wide, flexible, pointed and three to rarely five-nerved. The lateral nerves open more than 2 leaf widths below the blade tip at an acute angle into the middle nerve. The middle nerve is not lined with white cells in the middle of the leaf. The leaf base has no glandular humps. The stipules are fused tubular in the lower half.

The flowering period extends from June to September. The flowers are grouped in a loose 7 to 8 millimeter long spike .

The fruits are smooth, green, 1.8–2.3 mm long and 1.2–1.5 mm wide. The beak is short.

The narrow turionen are terminal or leaf axillary.

The chromosome number of the species is 2n = 26.

Occurrence

The common dwarf pondweed has its distribution focus in the northern hemisphere , but is cosmopolitan overall. In Europe the closed distribution area extends to 60 ° north latitude. In addition, there are scattered occurrences up to 70 ° north latitude in Scandinavia. It occurs in Central Europe in warm summer waters of the lowlands as well as in summer-cold high mountain lakes up to altitudes of over 2000 meters. It occurs in societies of the order Potamogetonetalia.

The common dwarf pondweed loves clear, nutrient-rich waters that are often surrounded by fertilized meadows ; it also tolerates brackish water . It settles in lakes, backwaters and ditches on humus-muddy ground. It is not very sensitive to fluctuations in temperature.
