Giacomo Sannesio (also Jacobo Sannesius ; * around 1560 in Belforte del Chienti ; † February 20, 1621 in Rome ) was an Italian clergyman, bishop of Orvieto and cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

He came from a wealthy middle-class family, his parents were Barnaba Sannesio and Fiordalisa Bozi.

Giacomo Sannesio studied law and then presided over a civil appeal court in Camerino . In 1591 he moved to Rome on the call of his brother Clemente and with his support he stayed at the court of Pietro Aldobrandini , a nephew of Pope Clement VIII . After the Pope had elevated Aldobrandini to cardinal in 1591, Sannesio was appointed canon of St. Peter , he was secretary of the Sacra Consulta and apostolic protonotary . As an art lover, he bought the works of famous painters of his time, including those by Michelangelo Merisi , who would later become famous under the pseudonym il Caravaggio .

In the consistory of June 9, 1604 , Clement VIII elevated him to cardinal priest , the red hat and the titular church of Santo Stefano al Monte Celio received Cardinal Sannesio on June 25 of the same year. He participated in the first conclave in 1605 , which Pope Leo XI. elected, as well as at the second conclave of the same year , from which Paul V emerged as Pope.

On June 20, 1605 he was appointed Bishop of Orvieto. In 1610 he restored the bishop's palace in Castel Giorgio , which was built by Giorgio della Rovere in 1477 and destroyed by fire in 1497 when Charles VIII's troops marched through France , further destruction resulted from two strong earthquakes in 1505 and 1511.

From January 13, 1620 to January 11, 1621, Giacomo Sannesio was treasurer of the Holy Cardinals College . He took part in the conclave of 1621 , which ended with the election of Gregory XV. ended.

He was buried in the church of San Silvestro al Quirinale in Rome.
