content

Maria is kidnapped into a dream world where a giant dragon keeps her captive. It is now up to her sister Giana to save her from the dream world. Giana has learned how to manipulate her dreams. She uses this new ability in her dreams and can now switch between the nice blonde and the punky red-haired character. The two variants of Giana are symbolic of pubertal development, the dichotomy between anger and self-confidence that she goes through. The change of characters affects the skills, the environment and also the music. As in the previous parts, Giana can collect diamonds and discover secrets while looking for Maria.

Gameplay

description

The game takes up the basic game principle and motif of the original title The Great Giana Sisters , but playfully brings the topic of transformation to the fore. Giana's forms have different abilities. While the blonde Giana masters the vertebral leap and can glide over larger abysses, the red-haired Giana is able to break through obstacles and push off walls in order to reach higher areas. Due to the fluid change between Giana's manifestations, the player can also combine her skills. In the course of the game, the change and the exact timing of the changes to solve the tasks is assumed.

In Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams there are three worlds with a total of 23 levels. The levels must be unlocked and can then be selected individually. One goal is to collect as many diamonds as possible, although there are also large crystals that are mostly difficult to reach or hidden. When you find them, the large diamonds unlock images in a gallery. At the end of a world there is a boss who has to be defeated. In addition to the standard adventure mode, there are other modes for playing the game. In the Score Attack it is important to collect as many points as possible, with opponents also earning points. In the Time Attack , all diamonds and opponents do not matter, because the time in which you pass the level is decisive here. In hardcore mode, which you have to unlock first, there are no checkpoints and you start again at the beginning of the level when you die. Then there is the over-hardcore mode. Just like the hardcore mode, it must first be unlocked by playing through the individual levels in the hardcore mode. In over-hardcore, you only have one life for the entire game.

development

Production and publication

Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams is the first title from the German development studio Black Forest Games. The company was founded in spring 2012 after the bankruptcy of Spellbound Entertainment AG and took over a large part of the workforce, projects and trademark rights, including The Great Giana Sisters . When the company started its crowdfunding campaign on July 30, 2012 with the goal of 150,000 US dollars, the title had already been in development for around a year and the first levels and the first intermediate opponent had been completed. Therefore, the company was able to provide a playable demo with the first two levels on August 24, 2012, one week before the end of the campaign. The funding campaign ended successfully on August 31, 2012, and Black Forest Games raised a total of US $ 186,158 from 6,149 supporters.

On August 30, 2012, Project Giana was one of the first titles presented in the Greenlight program on the online distribution platform Steam , which gives customers the opportunity to vote for projects and, if there is a corresponding quorum, offers developers the prospect of a possible distribution via Steam. During the same period, the developer also called for a vote on the game's title. The choices were Twisted Dreams , Giana's Twisted Dream and Project Giana . On September 21, 2012 Black Forest announced the final title with Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams . On October 15, 2012, the title was approved by Steam operator Valve for sale on Steam.

Black Forest Games released Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams on October 23, 2012 in the Windows version as a download on Steam, GOG.com and Gamersgate . On November 5th, 2012 the first patch 1.0.1 was submitted, which improved the gameplay and the music, as well as fixed some bugs. The remixed mode, which makes the game easier, came with further improvements to the frame rate and additional audio and control options on July 26, 2013 with the patch 1.1.1. On March 20, 2013, the Xbox 360 version was released for download via Xbox Live Arcade , and in April 2013 the game will finally be released for PlayStation 3 via PSN . A PC retail version was released at Easter 2013. This collector's edition includes two additional levels, two additional skins as well as a Giana Sisters fan poster and the soundtrack for the game on a separate CD with 19 tracks by composer Chris Hülsbeck and the band Machinae Supremacy .

music

Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams brings together the composer of the original Great Giana Sisters, Chris Hülsbeck , with the Swedish heavy metal band Machinae Supremacy and Fabian Del Priore , who also worked on Giana Sisters DS .
