Giancarlo Trombini (born January 1, 1934 in Ravenna ) is an Italian neurologist , psychiatrist , psychologist and psychoanalyst (SPI).

life and work

After studying medicine, Trombini studied psychology with Renzo Canestrari at the University of Bologna . In 1975 he received a professorship in general psychology at the University of Padua . In 1977, however, he was recalled to the University of Bologna, where he received the first Italian chair for psychosomatic medicine . This was followed by the professorship for clinical psychology from 1990 to 2008 . From 1989 to 2006 he was director of the Center for Research into Psychosomatic Disorders at the University of Bologna ( Centro Interdipartimentale per lo Studio dei disturbi psicosomatici dell'Università di Bologna ). Trombini has been retired since 2008.

Trombini is a psychotherapist and psychoanalyst oriented towards gestalt theory , a combination not unusual in Italy for historical reasons (both psychoanalysis and gestalt psychology were made famous in Italy by Cesare Musatti ). From the 1970s onwards, Trombini and his colleagues developed the 'giocoterapia focale' (Focal Play Therapy), a form- theoretical and psychotherapeutic variant of play therapy with children (especially children of pre-linguistic age) in which the parents or caregivers of the Children are involved in therapy in play situations.

In his publications Trombini seeks to integrate psychoanalytic theory and practice with the field theoretical approach of Gestalt theory. One focus is on psychosomatic complaints, for which Trombini and his team suggest a special form of psychotherapy based on gestalt theory and psychoanalysis with a supportive and expressive character.
