The lake of Giannitsa , ( Greek Λίμνη των Γιαννιτσών Limin ton Giannitson even Λουδία, Loudia or Βάλτος των Γιαννιτσών Váltos ton Giannitson "Swamp of Giannitsa" Bulgarian Ениджевардарското езеро Enidschevardarskoto esero or Пазарският гьол, Pasarskijat Gjol; Turkish Yenice Gölü ) was a Lake south of the central Macedonian city of Giannitsa . It was drained at the beginning of the 20th century with the aim of fighting malaria and then for agricultural use.

history

In ancient times, a large part of the plain in what is now “Lower Macedonia” was covered by the sea. This is clear from historical sources. Over time, the sea level retreated to the south, partly due to river deposits. The Giannitsa Lake and the extensive marshes surrounding it gradually formed in the area . The Loudías formed the natural outflow of the lake .

The extension of the lake was approximately 10,000 stremmas (= 100 ha), the swamps extended over 340,000 stremmas (= 340 ha). Together they formed the váltos ( βάλτος 'swamp' ). This name meant the entire ecosystem and the dense reed belt, which was a playground for malaria due to the sheer numbers of mosquitoes .

During the catastrophe in Asia Minor and the population exchange, it became necessary to develop new agricultural areas in order to secure a livelihood in the new villages in the area and also to fight malaria. The drainage of the lake, which was carried out from 1928 to 1932 , was carried out by the American New York Company Foundation .

In the 19th century, the wetland gained importance in the conflict between Greece and the Ottoman Empire. From 1900 on, armed clashes took place in the south of Giannitsa between the Turkish occupation forces and Bulgarian insurgents on the one hand and Greek insurgents on the other. In addition to the Greek rebels, Bulgarian rebels also used Lake Giannitsa and its wetland as a retreat during armed actions, against Turkish occupation forces, but also against the Greek population themselves. The lake played a role in the Macedonia battle , especially the two eponymous battles, which took place on August 6 and December 21, 1906 .

In October 1912, Giannitsa moved to the center of the First Balkan War with the Battle of Giannitsa. Greek troops defeated the Ottoman army between November 1st and 2nd, 1912. The officer Tellos Agras became famous, who tried with a small group of fighters to bring the area under Greek control. His life became known and popular in Greece in particular through the historical novel Sta mystiká tou váltou ( Στα μυστικά του Βάλτου 'In the secrets of the swamp' ) by the Pinelopi Delta .
