Gildo Mahones

Gildo Mahones (* 2. June 1929 in New York City ; † 27. April 2018 ) was an American jazz pianist of modern jazz .

Live and act

Gildo Mahones' parents were from Puerto Rico; he worked at the beginning of his career in 1948 with Joe Morris and until 1951 with Milt Jackson . After serving in the US Army , he was a regular pianist in Lester Young's band from 1953 to 1956 . He then played in the formation Les Jazz Modes by Charlie Rouse and Julius Watkins , as well as with Sonny Stitt and Bennie Green . From 1959 he was an accompanist for Lambert, Hendricks & Ross (or Bevan). After the vocal ensemble broke up, Mahones moved to Los Angeles in the mid-1960s , working freelance (with Joe Williams , Sweets Edison, among others ) and in Hollywood studios. During this time he had his own trio and also worked with Lou Rawls , Art Farmer , James Moody , the Harold Land / Blue Mitchell Quintet, Jim Hall , Benny Carter and with the singers Leon Thomas , Abbey Lincoln , Joe Williams and Big Joe Gymnast . For Prestige Records he recorded two albums under his own name in 1961 and 1963, again for the Interplay label in 1990. In the 1980s he also worked as an arranger for Lorez Alexandria ; In 2013 he still performed with his trio with bassist Glenn Richman and drummer Greg Wyser-Prattein at the jazz school in Berkeley.
