Giovanni Battista Alfieri

Giovanni Battista Pellegrino Alfieri, conte di Cortemiglia (born January 15, 1697 in Asti , † April 1, 1763 in Cagliari ) was a general and viceroy of the Kingdom of Sardinia-Piedmont . He was related to the writer Vittorio Alfieri and to the architect Benedetto Alfieri .

Life

Giovanni Battista Alfieri was trained as an infantry officer. As a staff officer he took part in the War of the Austrian Succession with the Mondovì and Vercelli militia regiments and distinguished himself at Ventimiglia . In 1745 he took over the command of the forces in the Susa valley . In 1754 he commanded the La Regina regiment , and the following year the Fucilieri di Sua Altezza Reale regiment . Alfieri became major general in 1757 and governor of Cuneo in 1758 , lieutenant general in 1761 and viceroy of Sardinia in 1762 . He died there in 1763 and was buried in the Cathedral of Cagliari.
