Giovanni Battista Bronzini (born September 4, 1925 in Bari , † March 17, 2002 in Bari) was an Italian anthropologist and folklorist .

Life

Bronzini studied at the La Sapienza University in Rome and was a student of the ethnologist Paolo Toschi (1893–1974).

He became professor of cultural anthropology at the University of Bari and was editor of the scientific journal Lares from 1974 until his death .

Influenced by the works of the writer Carlo Levi and the poet Rocco Scotellaro , he investigated the rural world of his homeland and researched the magical- superstitious rituals, sayings and traditions of this society during the time of fascism in Italy in the 30s and 40s. Since it was founded in 1985, Bronzini was a board member of the non-profit Marino Piazzolla Foundation, which works to publish and maintain contemporary Italian and international literature and awards grants. Under Bronzini's leadership, texts by Amelia Rosselli , Elio Pagliarani , but also by Sarah Kirsch , Seamus Heaney and Philippe Jaccottet were published.

Ten years after his death, the Accettura municipality named a place after him because he had done a lot for researching and revitalizing the “ Maggio di Accettura ” festival .

His son Stefano is a professor of English and English literature at the University of Bari and was previously director of the local Institute for European Cultural History.
